By the author of MC Grating. The FMM is known to become numerically unstable for low-loss metallic gratings under TM incidence. Analysing the problem mode by mode, the paper traces the instability to specific modes of the corrugation and shows how to suppress it, so that the Fourier method stays usable exactly where the true-mode method is hardest to apply.

The software's history records "suppression of the FMM instabilities in highly conductive gratings" as one of the developments implemented in the modal codes.

MC Grating is Windows software that computes diffraction gratings by the modal method and the C method. The download page has the current release, which runs in demo mode without a license key.
