The C method for gratings periodic in two directions. In the non-orthogonal translation coordinate system that follows the surface, Granet shows that any field in a homogeneous region can be written as a TE part plus a TM part, and that the complete solution follows from the eigensolutions of a single operator that does not depend on polarization. Multilayer crossed gratings are handled by the same propagation scheme as in one dimension.

Chandezon Crossed implements this formulation; the site's history records the crossed C-method code as available from 2010.

MC Grating is Windows software that computes diffraction gratings by the modal method and the C method. The download page has the current release, which runs in demo mode without a license key.
