The first report of total reflection of light from the corrugated surface of a dielectric waveguide: at the angle where the incident wave couples to a guided mode, the reflected wave carries all the power. This is the guided-mode resonance that a large literature, and the biosensor applications MC Grating is used for, grew from. Two of the authors, Sychugov and Tishchenko, are part of the research school the software comes from.
