A short companion note: for highly conducting gratings the complex transcendental equation of the lossy modal theory becomes hard to solve, and roots are easily missed. The paper gives an improved root-finding procedure and demonstrates it on an aluminium grating.
Finding every lamellar mode reliably is the problem MC Grating's own mode-search algorithm addresses; the history of the software records that a "reliable lamellar modes searching algorithm in TMM" was one of the developments implemented in Modal Collinear.

MC Grating is Windows software that computes diffraction gratings by the modal method and the C method. The download page has the current release, which runs in demo mode without a license key.
