The rigorous modal theory of the dielectric lamellar grating. Inside the rectangular grooves the field is expanded in the exact eigenmodes of the periodic layer, whose propagation constants come from a transcendental equation; those modes are then matched to plane-wave expansions in the media above and below. Because the modes are exact, high index contrast and deep grooves pose no difficulty.
This is the origin of the True Modes Method (TMM) in Modal Collinear. The next two papers in the series extend it to lossy metals.
