A deeply corrugated, high-contrast slab waveguide reflects a focused beam resonantly under normal incidence, something a weak grating cannot do because the coupled wave would leave the beam before interfering with it. The paper explains the effect by a very strong intra-guide coupling that keeps the coupled wave localised under the beam, and relates the coupled-mode picture to the photonic-crystal description of the same structure.
