An amorphous-silicon wire-grid polarizer shows a quasi-resonant rise in its extinction ratio near one wavelength. The paper computes the effective indices, fields and transmission of the lowest grating modes and finds that at the quasi-resonance the first two TE modes reach the output with about equal weight and opposite phase, so they cancel: the TE transmission falls and the extinction ratio rises. Numerical optimization then shows how the quasi-resonance wavelength moves with the grating parameters.

By Boris Usievich, who maintains MC Grating, with I. M. Akhmedzhanov and J. Kh. Nurligareev. The modal calculations were made with MC Grating, as the paper states: its true-mode and Fourier-mode results agreed with the analytical solution, and it gave the contribution of each mode to the transmission separately. The paper's plot of transmission against grating thickness, mode by mode, is the calculation the Modes Interference window makes, in all three modal codes.
